Israeli president intends to consult small parties on forming the government

Israel ·

Herzog said he intends to hold consultations with smaller parties on forming a new government. The talks, which will be broadcast live, are set to begin on Wednesday afternoon with the Religious Zionism party, followed by talks with Shas and Yisrael Beytenu.

Israel's president has a mostly ceremonial role, but after an election he consults party leaders and then nominates a lawmaker to try to form a government. The Knesset, Israel's parliament, has 120 seats, and a governing coalition needs 61 of them.
