"Membership open to all"... Eisenkot announces 4 principles for participation in his government

Israel ·

Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar party, said on Saturday that participation in his potential government is open to all parties, including Arab parties in the Knesset, provided they accept four principles he set out for the next stage. The announcement comes as he intensifies consultations and political meetings to speed up forming a new governing coalition.

Israel's Knesset is elected by proportional representation, so governments are normally coalitions of several parties, and 61 of its 120 seats are needed to win a confidence vote. Arab parties in the Knesset have seldom been part of Israeli governing coalitions, so any offer of participation to them is a notable shift.
