Ambassador Bahmid: Iran is using Houthi militias to serve its expansionist project and destabilise the region

Yemen ·

Yemen's ambassador to Malaysia, Dr Adel Bahmid, warned of growing risks from the Houthi militias, which he said are backed by Iran. He said their threats no longer stay within Yemen or the Bab al-Mandab strait but extend to international navigation and global trade, with economic, security and humanitarian consequences beyond the region.

The Houthi movement (Ansar Allah) controls Sanaa and much of northern Yemen, while the internationally recognised government holds other areas. The Bab al-Mandab strait links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is a key route for global shipping.
