Iran is studying a letter sent by US Vice President JD Vance to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, in an effort to restart the diplomatic track.

Iran and the United States have lacked formal diplomatic relations since 1980, and their disputes centre on Iran's nuclear programme and shipping security in the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil route between Iran and Oman.
